"Langs Beach" 8x12" Acrylic on canvas by Richard Robinson
I was in a cave for 4 months. My cave had wheels. A camper cave. I explored the length and breadth of New Zealand, keeping mainly to myself, enjoying the solitude and daily adventures.
When I returned home to Waipu, where I'd recently moved to, I felt the deep need to connect with my community and give something of myself. So I started a Sip Laugh Paint class on friday nights. I bought 9 table easels, all the paints brushes and canvases I would need, and put together the first lesson plan, which was this - Langs Beach.
I wanted to make it as easy as possible for absolute beginners to come away with a beautiful painting and be surprised at their own ability.
My family were my first guinea pigs, great for ironing out the wrinkles in the class.
The first real class was SO much fun - everything I had hoped it would be. Everyone, including me, had a great time and were proud of their paintings. Bonus: I now get out on friday nights!
You'll find the video takes you through the painting in very small steps, precisely explained, with regular pauses.
I show you each colour mix as it happens and you also have these colour mixing formulas to help you. eg. Mix#1 is half blue, half white = the colour of the small circle in the middle. Easy!
Colours required: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, White.
Halfway through the painting we put it aside for 10 minutes of free painting. Turn up the ABBA and cut loose!
So, grab a friend and your beverage of choice, put on some groovy music, get your brushes out and enjoy this easy painting class. Have fun!
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
—Walt Disney

Hi I’m Richard. I’ve been painting my whole life and back in 2001 I traded my graphic design career for the humble life of a full time artist. I love painting, and as it turns out, I love teaching too.
Nowadays I balance my life between parenting, painting, surfing, travelling and teaching. My work is regularly featured in international art magazines, in galleries in New Zealand and America, on TV and in my Mum’s house.
I give outdoor painting workshops in interesting spots around this beautiful planet of ours and love encouraging people to paint. Two of my favourite artists are John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla.

I’d love to be your new teacher.
Richard is a master artist with an exceptional skill in identifying and communicating key factors to making successful paintings. I have found his video workshops an excellent resource for improving my own work.
