Welcome to this painting workshop where I’ll be showing you how to paint a coastal scene inspired by a place called Taupo Bay in northern, New Zealand.
In this painting tutorial video I’ll show you how to paint realistic coastal landscape with ocean waves, how to paint cliffs that achieve depth and realism, how to communicate light in your painting and aliveness and energy within the composition.
I also give you instructions and tips for painting clouds, sky, cliffs, rocks and foliage.
I show you the design behind the composition, how to establish your colours and values and create a harmonious painting that reads well and how to mix those beautiful ocean colours which I demonstrate on my palette.
I show you my whole process from start to finish and if you’re new to painting, I explain some of the principles of colour theory as I work through the painting.
This video is packed full of useful information that will help you to improve your seascape painting skills and create successful art works.

Hi I'm Samuel Earp, a traditional realist artist who loves to paint landscapes in oils, especially scenes of New Zealand, Australia and Guernsey among others. I grew up in the South West of England where I did a lot of drawing and painting from an early age. I moved to the beautiful country of New Zealand in 2009 and have been painting there ever since. I look forward to being your painting tutor!
Hi I'm Samuel Earp, a traditional realist artist who loves to paint landscapes in oils, especially scenes of New Zealand, Australia and Guernsey among others. I was born on the island of Guernsey in 1979 but grew up in the South West of England where I did a lot of drawing and painting from an early age, I always loved landscape art even as a child. I moved to the beautiful country of New Zealand in 2009 and have been there ever since.
I have a passion for painting landscapes, especially water and the sea, which I enjoy painting most of all. I also love to paint outdoors on location (en plein air).
'I love recreating the colours, light and atmosphere of nature on canvas. Painting gives me an enormous sense of well-being and connectedness'.
I especially love the dramatic landscapes and beautiful colours that are so unique to the New Zealand wilderness and I channel this into my mountain paintings. I look forward to being your painting tutor!
Richard, you've done it again. I've never seen anything like this. It's like having a complete art course in your pocket. I find it really handy for using outdoors as well as in the studio. All the best, and good painting.
