Painting a value study

Spent a couple of hours on the side of the road painting a 10x8" value study of this old farm shed. Just my kind of building - old and decrepid.

Leaving out the color gives you a good chance to focus on other aspects of painting that often get overlooked in the rush to paint dramatic color - important stuff like value relationships, accurate drawing and lost and found edges. Looking forward to returning there soon and seeing what difference this value study has made to my color perception in this scene.
